🔐 Documents and critical reservations
- Passport / Schengen: Croatia is inside the Schengen Area and uses the euro; apply your normal Schengen 90/180-day planning rules.
- Timed tickets: Book Plitvice and, in peak months, Krka online before locking hotel nights.
- Ferries: Check Jadrolinija/Kapetan Luka schedules before fixing Hvar and Korčula days. Island services are seasonal and subject to changes.
- Rental car: Use a one-way Zagreb ➔ Dubrovnik contract or drop the car in Split before the passenger-catamaran island section.
- Must-pack: Water shoes, compact towel, sun hat, rain shell, power bank, offline maps, and a soft day bag for ferries.
🇭🇷 Croatia self-drive, ferry, parking and daily-life notes▼
🚗 Driving, tolls and parking
- Road side: Drive on the right. Motorways are comfortable; old-town streets, island lanes and summer parking are the real constraints.
- Tolls: Croatian motorway tolls are distance/category based. Keep the entry ticket until exit and pay by card/cash unless using ETC/ENC.
- Parking: Zagreb, Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik old cores should be treated as walk-in zones. Park once outside the center.
- Ferry buffer: Do not schedule tight ferry connections after long drives. Add queue time, luggage time and port confusion time.
🛍️ Food, shops and heat rhythm
- Supermarkets: Konzum, Studenac, Tommy and Plodine are the practical road-trip chains.
- Foods to target: Štrukli in Zagreb, seafood/black risotto on the coast, peka if reserved, oysters in Mali Ston, Grk/Pošip wine on Korčula.
- Summer timing: Start parks, walls and fortress climbs early. Reserve beaches, ferries, shaded lunches and siesta time for midday.
- Toilets: National parks, museums, restaurants and larger ports are easiest. Smaller beaches may be seasonal or paid.
